The Impact of Social Interaction on the Hostile Media Effect
Abstract
In order to explain the hostile media effect, we place more emphasis on the
power of the impact of individual involvement and individual information processing.
Although there are several studies on the influence of social networks on the hostile
media effect, the studies on the interaction effect between social tie and individual
involvement and the studies on the role of the impact of that interaction on the hostile
media effect are rare. The data of this study was collected from a survey of the
students (N = 316) at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, with cottage products being
the research topic. The main conclusions are: (1) in low-involvement conditions, the
social interaction as a peripheral route of information procession produces an impact on
audience perception of media bias and judgments; (2) the strength of the social tie is
one of the important factors to influence personal
