College of Material Science and Engineering, H ebei University of Science and echnology, Shijiazhuang 050018, H ebei, China) Abstract: By sampling, examining and analyzing of 40Cr bars w ith longitudinal surface cracks taken in t he second rolling mill of Shijiazhuang Steel, it w as found that the slag remains in the cracks have the same elements as the mould powder. Combining w ith the study of technical process, it can be concluded that the longitudinal surface cracking in the bar is caused by viscous slag and cracks on billet surface. It is import ant for eliminating viscous slag and cracks on billet surface to select the proper mould pow der wit h proper physical chemical properties including lit- tle viscosity and low melt ing point and high smelting rate, and opt imize casting technological parameters and stabilize casting process.
