Abstract：TheHermitian R—symmetricmaximalandminima1ranksolutionstothematrix
equation = B andtheiroptimalapproximation areconsidered．Byapplyingthematrixrank
method，thenecessary and sufiicient conditionsfortheexistenceofthemaximaland minimal
ranksolutionswith hermitian R—symmetrictotheequationisobtained ．Theexpressionsofsuch
solutionstothisequationarealsogivenwhenthesolvability conditionsaresatisfied．In addition，
correspondingminimalranksolutionsettotheequationandtheexplicitexpressionofthenearest
matrixtoagivenmatrixintheFrobeniusnorm areprovided．
