The background, status and the t rend of the automated generat ion were discussed, and the re search on the method of auto selection of the marine features on digital charts w ere carried out. The principles of the coastline generalization and an application in automatic coastline cartographic generalization w ith fract als and fractal dimension w ere analyzed. Based on a research about distribute regulat ion and characteristics of the linear features and the assurance of the target of the automated generalizations, some realization methods of quantization, modeling and algorit hmization material ways about marine features on digital charts were put for w ard, and the automat ic generalizat ions of coastline at a certain extent w ere preparatorily realized.
