COURSE DESCRIPTION Department and Course Number CS 1043 Course Coordinator: Roger Wainwright Course Title: Introduction to Programming and Problem Solving Total Credits: 3 Current Catalog Description: Introduction to a disciplined approach to problem-solving methods and algorithm development using procedural and data abstraction. Coding, debugging, testing, and documentation, using an object-oriented development environment. Programing language is Java. Textbook: Computing Concepts with Java 2 Essentials, 2nd Ed., Horstmann, Wiley and Sons,2000. References: UNIX man pages and UNIX handouts. Course Goals/Objectives: The students should come out of the course knowing how write Java applications and Java applets. In addition, we work on both UNIX workstations and NT workstations and a non-trivial part of the course is for the students to learn both environments to some extent. In the past weve used Java 1.1, and used Microsoft J++ in the NT environment. This semester, weve moved to Java 1.2, and were considering changing to Symantic Visual Café. Finally, the students are expected to learn structured programming techniques and algorithm design techniques. Prerequisites by Topic None. Major Topics Covered in the Course computing history and simple computer architecture UNIX, NT environments algorithm design structured programming in Java, including - predefined data types - structured data types, objects - applets vs. applications - selection and looping constructs - functions and methods - simple string manipulation - sorting and searching algorithms (typically selection-sort, linear and binary search) Laboratory projects (specify number of weeks on each) Homework: Calculate algebraic formulas (1) While-loop program with selection inside the loop (1.5-2) Program with user-defined functions and/or objects. (2) Multiple passes through an array, sorting. (1.5-2) Multiple passes through an array, s
