Introduction Whether the job hunters are able to get the jobs they have long been dreamed of largely depends on their perfomance during the interview.The job market is crowed with thousands of people which is more than ever owing to the economic crisis.So how to stand out among all these competitors and win the favoured position? This thesis aims to offer these job hunters with some language tips that needed in job interview from the prospective of the Cooperative Principle so as to help them succeed in the interview. This thesis is divided into three parts. The first part presents a general introduction to the Cooperative Principle and its maxims, the second part is a brief review of job interview, the third part, with the help of several vivid examples, further studies the application of the Cooperative Principle in job interview and gives job hunters some helpful tips at the same times. Part I The Cooperative Principle A Brief Introduction to the Cooperative Principle The Cooperative Principle is the principle used in comnversation to stipulate people’s talk.Grice set it up in 1975.Grice notices that in daily conversation people do not usually say things directly but tend to imply them.This can be illustrated by the following example: eg .1 A: Can you answer the telephone? B: I’m in the bathroom. 2 A: What do you think about this film? B: I wish I didn’t come. In the above examples,what Speaker B said is not the adequate responses to what Speaker A asked.But Speaher A can understand what Speaker B implies In the context.And Speaker A also supposes that Speaker B is willing to cooperate in the conversation,i.e.,what he says in response must be relevant to the ongoing talk. Grice argues that there should be a general principle that all participants are expected to observe in making a conversation,He call this guiding principle the Cooperative Principle:”Make your conversational contribution such as is required,at the stage at which
