A Study on Application of COCA in Improving Lexical Richness in Non-English Majors’ Writings 利用COCA语料库提高大学英语学生写作中词汇丰富性的实证研究; 1. Introduction ; 1.2 Purpose of the Study The study would testify whether COCA could be used to improve the lexical richness in students’ writings. 1.3 Significance of the Study It was expected that the study could make a positive exploration in how to improve the lexical richness in students’ writings. ;2. Literature Review; 2.1.2 Studies on Lexical Richness in ESL \ EFL Writings Abroad 2.1.3 Studies on Lexical Richness in EFL Writings at Home 2.2 Studies on Corpus-assisted Language Teaching 2.2.1 Studies on Corpus-assisted ESL/EFL Writing Teaching Abroad 2.2.2 Studies on Corpus-assisted EFL Writing Teaching at Home 2.2.3 Studies on English Language and English Teaching Based-on COCA; 4.2 Research Subjects The subjects were selected from the second-year non-English majors of grade A in Gansu Normal University for Nationalities, since there may be little difficulty for the second-year students of grade A to use COCA. The author analyzed the two classes’ scores of CET 4, excluded those who failed to complete all the 5 writing tasks, and selected the first 30 students of each class in CET 4 as the subjects. ; 4.3 Research Instruments 4.3.1 Corpus of Contemporary American English 4.3.2 Writing Tests 4.3.3 Softwares 1) AntConc3.2.4 The software was used to make the concordance of the materials selected from COCA for the classroom teaching and also used to calculate the lexical errors in the students’ pre- and post-test writings and do other analysis. ; 2) Range32 The software Range32 was designed by Prof. Nation and Prof. Coxhead in Victoria University, New Zealand. The software has three word lists. Word list 12 was taken
