ALICE WALKER’S THE COLOR PURPLE: WHAT (BLACK) WOMEN SHOULD DO TO BREAK FREE OF ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIPS Fitria Akhmerti Primasita, S.S., M.A. English Department, Faculty of Letters and Fine Arts Sebelas Maret University Surakarta This paper discusses black women‟s victimization in abusive relationships and what they do to survive and break themselves free of the abusive relationships in Alice Walker‟s novel The Color Purple. It is hoped that the discussion can reveal Walker‟s view on what black women should do to break themselves free of abusive relationships. It is further hoped that although Walker‟s view is on black women, revealing the view can still be beneficial for anyone, both women and men, who is in need of knowledge about abusive relationships. The analysis shows that black men have been led to believe that men should dominate their women and children and thus they act as if they owned and fully controlled their wives and children and inflict violence and abuse to command obedience. Black women who frequently choose to become silent and submissive victims of abusive relationships are encouraged to learn to value themselves, which can help them gain self- confidence that leads to a self-affirmation that they deserve
