SENTENCE EXPLANATIONS 1. [原句] A conventional artist of this period was not interested in showing nature and people as they really were. as they were意为“照他们本来的样子”。 The trousers are rather long, but I’ll take them just as they are. A witness must state the facts as they are. [小试] 用as they are / were翻译下列句子。 Key: ① You had better take things as they are. ② Finally he had no choice but to leave things as they were. 2. [原句] Among the painters who broke away from the traditional style of painting were the Impressionists, who lived and worked in Paris. Among the painters were the Impressionists, 是一个倒装句,倒装形式是:表语+be+主语。 The Impressionists were among the painters。该复合句的从句为由who引导的两个定语从句,分别修饰the painters 和the Impressionists。 3. [点拨] 本句中的that is 可以写作that is to say,意为“换句话说”,相当于in other words, 用于更清楚地解释刚刚说过的话。解释部分主语是the painter, 谓语是由not ... but ... William Merritt Chase William Merritt Chase was born on November 1st, 1849 in Nineveh, Indiana.
