NathanielHawthorne纳桑尼尔·霍桑
* Nathaniel Hawthorne 纳桑尼尔·霍桑 Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804----1864) Nathaniel Hawthorne, regarded as the most prominent American writer of fiction in the 19th century, is the founder of the psychological analysis novels of American romantic literature. Different from his contemporary novelists in relation to literary themes, Hawthorne showed his keen interest in the problem of guilt, and his major novels are almost concerning sensational material, like poisoning, murder, adultery and crime, because he was passionate in exploring the result of sin, the effect on human conscience of guilt , pride and so on. Hawthorne was born in a declined family in a town named Salem in Massachusetts. He was looked after and subsidized to enter Bowdoin College by his well-to-do(富裕的) uncle after his father’s death, and he graduated in 1825. During the following 12 years of seclusion, he read widely and prepared for his literary career with hard working as an apprentice(学徒),but his toil brought him little success. The only work worth mentioning was his first novel Fanshawe (范肖),which failed to attract popular and public attention. His next book Twice-Told Tales《重讲一遍的故事》(1837) was successful, which encouraged Hawthorne to make more breakthrough in literary. Hawthorne earned his living in the customhouse from 1839 to 1849 in Boston and Salem. In 1841,he took part in the transcendental communistic experiment, but he realized that it was distasteful for him. In 1842, he married and lived a happy life with his wife in Old Manse. *
