The Tangent Line (切線)
Let P be a point on a curve and Q be a nearby movable
point on that curve. The line through P and Q is called a
secant line (割線).
The tangent line at P is the limiting position of the secant
line as Q moves toward P along the curve.

Example 1 Find an equation of the tangent line to the
parabola y = x2 at the point P(1, 1).

Solution
‧Find the slope m of the tangent line
x 2 −1
‧The slope mPQ of the secant line PQ ismPQ , x ≠1
x −1
‧The slope m of the tangent line is the limit of the slops of
the secant lines as x → 1
x 2 −1 (x −1)(x +1)
