Starting from 1996, both installed capacity and annual power generation in China have ranked No. 2 in the world. China now has 897,000 km of power transmission lines with voltage of 35kV and above, total power transformation capacity of 1.57 billion kVA. In 2004, inter-regional energy transmission has reached 65.3 billion kWh. It is estimated to reach 74 billion kWh in 2005 . The service area of State Grid Corporation of China covers 26 provinces in China, accounting for 90% of Chinese national territory. SGCC provides electricity to more than 1 billion people. In the year 2004, SGCC’s total asset exceed 1100 billion RMB; total electric power sales volume reached 1289.1 billion kWh with total sales income of 590.1 billion RMB, all of which honored SGCC ranked No. 40th among the FORTUNE GLOBAL 500 Opportunities and Challenges Challenges in Grid Construction By the end of 2004, the per capita installed capacity was only 0.34kW with per capita generation of 1670 kWh Newly Installed Capacity from 1995 to 2005 In the coming 15 years, Chinese annual power consumption growth will reach 170 TWh , annual newly installed power generation capacity will exceed 33 GW .
