Where German Tunes Accompany the Wursts A Review of Prost Grill and Garten, in Garden City AFTER declining for decades, the number of German restaurants on Long Island has seen an uptick this year, with the opening of  HYPERLINK /MTK.htm \o The Web site. Zum Schneider in Montauk last spring and  HYPERLINK / \o The Web site. Croxley’s Ale House and Biergarten in Smithtown and  HYPERLINK / \o The Web site. Prost Grill and Garten in Garden City, both in August. Prost is owned by Bill Daly and James McCartney, both first-time restaurateurs. The chef is Tom Rockensies, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, who previously worked at the Plandome Country Club in Manhasset. The restaurant, with its wall of French doors, is more attractive than some German places, which can lean toward the rough-and-ready. It has two picnic tables — with three more outside — but also more comfortable seating on an upholstered banquette that runs the length of the room. Floors are bare, and wood tables are topped only with plastic place mats, though napkins are cloth. The noise level is deafening on busy nights, but the spirited German music in the background had patrons, especially those with children at the table, clapping to the tunes. There are a number of things at Prost that don’t deserve applause, however. Service tops the list. On a busy Saturday night, when we wanted to order, our waitress was talking to other servers and would not look in our direction — even after we got the attention of the server to whom she was speaking. On a quiet Tuesday, another server was more attentive but failed to clean the table (which was strewed with red cabbage) before dessert was served. She just plunked our sweets down on top of the cabbage. Some of the dishes, especially the appetizers, were less than praiseworthy. The Alsatian pizza (tarte flambée) had tasty toppings of Gruyère cheese, crème fra?che and mushrooms, but the crust was limp. Sauerkraut croquettes were bland, with
