* * * * * * * * * * * * Despite of the existing WSN-based SHM systems, some inherent roadblocks to realizing WSN-based SHM still need to be addressed to make them practical. Wireless sensor nodes usually have limited resources (i.e. limited power supply and limited computational capability) and wireless communication has limited bandwidth. While on the other hand, SHM is relatively more complex than other monitoring applications of WSNs, particularly in terms of sampling frequency and computational complexity. Difficulties of WSN-based SHM system mainly come from the contradiction between high requirements of SHM and resource-limited WSNs. ? For example, most of SHM systems use vibration data collected using the accelerometers to estimate the structural condition. Vibration-based SHM require sampling frequency to be high enough to capture damage-sensitive information contained in the measured signals. For robust estimation or due to the heavily damped nature of most civil structures, sampling over one hundred Hz is quite common[13]. Such high sampling rate generates a large amount of data, and delivering these data through wireless link is a very difficult task. For example, the wireless sensor network system implemented on the Golden Gate Bridge[8] generated took over nine hours to complete the transmission of the 20MB of data (1600 seconds of data, sampling at 50Hz on 64 sensor nodes) back to a central station. Such a long delivery time not only indicates a serious delay, but also implies significant amount of energy consumption. Although 4 high-volume and expensive lantern batteries (11Ah) are used for each sensor node, even this battery pack can only support about ten days of working. Due to the similar reason, all the WSN-based SHM systems mentioned above are temporarily deployed, except for the system in the Torre Aquila Tower, which have been working for 4 months without a battery change.
