Sculpture The earliest Greek sculptures were those of Gods. They are mostly stiff, lifeless wood carvings. Towards the 7th century B.C. the size of the statues became bigger and life-size. The figures usually stand very stiff with arms close to their sides, hands clenched or flat against the legs. They have narrow waists but broad shoulders and their hair was done in neat and rhythmical rows. Towards the 5th century B.C., there occurred a marked development in sculpture which had gone from the stage when everything was stiff and mechanical to a period in which the beauty of the internal structure of human bodies and mythological figures are well-observed and brought out. Discus Thrower A sculpture in which the relaxation and contraction of the muscle were successfully brought out and the sense of body movement is remarkably strong, bringing out a good sense of harmony and the balance of opposites.
