Unit 3 Computers 计算机 Do home computers help kids learn? 最新的研究表明,家用电脑并不是孩子成绩提高的必备条件。有时甚至会适得其反。 If you’re looking for a reason to put your wallet away before buying your kid a home computer for the school year, two studies may help you.The research shows that having a computer at home does not necessarily raise students’ test scores, especially in low-income families; it actually hurts scores. The findings of the studies are a wake-up call which is especially important in Silicon Valley. It’s easy here in the land of technology to see computers as the solution to every problem. However, the computer is just part of the answer. What goes with it is also important to encourage a student’ s success. “I think we can conclude from the research that if you give a powerful tool to somebody it is not useful until you let them know what to do with it,” says Rushton Hurley. One of the two studies was conducted (实施) in North Carolina by two Duke University professors while the other was done in Romania by researchers from the University of Chicago and Columbia University. The recent studies don’t clearly answer the question why test scores go down. But they do speculate (推测). And the problem is Facebook.OK,not Facebook completely. But if you have kids and computers, think about what they do with them.Sure,a paper or two and maybe a PowerPoint for class. And then Facebook and Google chat.Or maybe Facebook,Google chat and then homework.Or maybe they forget homework. But at home the computer can be right under our noses. We can demand that homework should come before Facebook and explain why the world has to work that way. If a kid knows how to use a home computer to get meaningful help with school, then having help at his or her fingertips (指尖) is clearly going to be an advantage for those with the tools.
