英语语言学导论课程课件 课件名称:语言学和外语教学 制 作 者:外国语学院 王敏霞 Chapter 11 Linguistics and Foreign Language Teaching Purpose of teaching: Invite students to the field of applied linguistics Focus of teaching: Language teaching and language learning The relation of linguistics to foreign language teaching Applied Linguistics: As a mediating area between linguistics and language teaching which interprets the results of linguistic theories and makes them user-friendly to the language teacher and learner The relation of linguistics to foreign language teaching Linguistics is beneficial to language teaching in two aspects: Firstly, applied linguistics extends theoretical linguistics in the direction of language learning and teaching, so that the teacher is enabled to make better decisions on the goal and content of the teaching. Secondly, applied linguistics states the insights and implications that linguistic theories have on the language teaching methodology. Once the goal and content of the teaching are settled, the teacher has to consider questions of how to teach. An overview Stage I (1880-1940)--Implicit Influence Modern L2 teaching began in the late 1880s. Linguistics emerged as an independent field of study at the beginning of the 20th century. Francois Gouin(古茵), a French teacher of Latin, was the first person who made an study on L2 teaching. “Series Method” or “Direct Method”(系列教学法或直接教学法). E.g. “I walk towards the door. I draw near to the door. I draw nearer to the door. I get to the door….” An overview Henry Sweet’s(斯维特1845-1912) Linguistic Approach: He was the first discussed the issue of applying linguistic theory to L2 teaching. He published A Handbook of Phonetics in 1887. He had great concern about the acquisition of a perfect native-accent when learning a foreign language. Harold Palmer(帕尔默1877-1949): “the father of British applied linguistics” He is the first person who explicitly made systemic and convincing arguments on the importance o
