* * * Chapter 11 Waves 11-1 Types of Waves 11-2 Traveling Waves (行波) 11-3 Simple Harmonic Wave (简谐波) 11-4 Speed of a Traveling Wave 11-5 Energy Transported by Waves 11-6 Superposition of Waves and Standing Waves (波的合成) (驻波) *11-7 Sound Waves *11-8 Beats (拍) 11-9 The Doppler Effect (多普勒效应) *11-10 Supersonic Speeds and Shock Waves (超音速) (冲击波) 11-1 Types of Waves 1. Mechanical waves: Waves that disturb and propagate through a medium. Such as water waves, sound waves, seismic waves. 2. Electromagnetic waves: A special class of waves that do not require a medium to propagate. Such as visible and ultraviolet light, radio and television waves, microwaves, x rays, and radar waves. Light waves from stars, for example, travel through the vacuum of space to reach us. 3. Matter waves(物质波): These waves are associated with electrons, protons, and other fundamental particles, and even atoms and molecules. 11-2 Traveling Waves y x y x If one end of a stretched string is suddenly snapped up and down, the action generates a pulse that travels along the string to the other end. If we move our hand up and down in continuous SHM, a continuous simple harmonic wave (SHW) travels along the string at velocity The wave travels from one point to another, as from one end of the string to the other end, is said to be traveling waves. Transverse and Longitudinal Waves Transverse wave: the displacement of every oscillating material medium element is perpendicular to the direction of travel of the wave. This motion is said to be transverse. Longitudinal wave: the motion of the elements of the wave medium is parallel to the wave’s travel. The motion is said to be longitudinal. The transfer of a disturbance through space without the accompanying transfer of matter. It is the wave that travels from one point to another and not the material (string or air) through which the wave moves. wave source
