INDUSTRY ANALYSIS FRAMEWORK -- A Global Perspective Textile Industry--March 1995 (Source: Bradley R. Gabosch, Textile Industry Segment Director) PURPOSE The purpose of the Industry Analysis Framework is to describe the fundamental forces driving an industry. It presents our auditors with a good framework with which to evaluate global industry risks and issues and, in turn, determine the applicability of these risks to specific clients. The Industry Analysis Framework accomplishes these objectives by: Presenting a brief description of the industry from a global perspective Discussing the critical elements of the Business Analysis Framework affecting the industry Presenting available global resources DESCRIPTION OF THE INDUSTRY The textiles industry is one of the largest industries in the world. The industry manufactures products for both industrial and consumer customers. Some of the products produced by the textile industry include: Spun Yarn Products Broadwoven Fabrics Cotton Fabrics Manmade Fiber Fabrics Wool Fabrics Nonwoven Fabrics Knit Fabrics Floorcoverings (Carpets) Manmade Fibers Noncellulosic Fibers, such as acrylic, nylon, olefin, polyester and spandex, are made from molecules of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen and are linked into long chains called polymers. These combinations are derived from petroleum, natural gas, air and water. They account for about 95 percent of total manmade fiber shipments. Cellulosic Fibers, which include rayon, acetate and triacetate, are made from modified wood pulp that has been dissolved into a liquid. The textile industry encompasses companies in all stages in the textile manufacturing process, from raw materials to finished product. The exception to this is apparel production. Finished apparel production is treated as a separate industry.
