(PAR, CIT, or FLX) * The AAP has a number of other resources that may be helpful to you in enhancing your MH practice. * * There is a policy statement on mental health competencies for primary care clinicians – using as a guideline the 6 competencies that the ACGME has formulated for training residents. Of note – this statement makes an argument that primary care providers are in a unique position to detect mental health conditions in adolescents. The statement recommends that primary care providers learn skills that will help with mental health screening and treatment, partner with mental health specialists to build relationships and enhance collaboration, and advocate for mental health services on a local and national level. Addressing Mental Health Concerns in Primary Care: A Clinician’s Toolkit has been developed to facilitate enhancements in the pediatric medical home. Organized according to the chronic care principles, the toolkit has 5 sections – Community Resources, Health Care Financing, Support for Children and Families, Clinical Information Systems/Delivery System Redesign, and Decision Support for Clinicians. This product is intended to enhance the quality of mental health care children and adolescents receive, whether in the medical home itself or through the medical home. One of the tools in the toolkit is the “Cluster Guidance”. The “Cluster Guidance” is a series of tools that provide a clinical framework and primary-care–specific guidance for the assessment and care of children and adolescents with commonly presenting symptom clusters. It is cross-linked to other resources, forms, and tools in the AAP mental health toolkit. This guidance can assist primary care practices in developing their protocols for the care of children with commonly presenting mental health problems. The example provided is the depression cluster.
