After petitioning the FDA, In May 2008, gastroenterology groups assembled their own task force, because they suspected if they didn’t have to pay 150 to a thousand bucks to anesthesia providers to give propofol, the medical world would be better served with more efficient, less costly care. Led by Dr. Rex, they had some pretty convincing stats which was published in 2009. * * American Associate for the Study of Liver Disease, American College of Gastroenterology, American gastroenterological Association and American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, touted their safety record as reported by rex and other international studies on physician directed administration of propofol by specially trained nurses as released by a position statement. * Anesthesia departments monitor all who do deep sedation including training, monitoring and Qaing. * “In the Medicare regulations, CMS specifically limits this to all physicians (MD/DO), as well as anesthesiologist assistants and nurse anesthetists,” Philip said. “CMS does not permit PAs, advanced practice nurses or registered nurses to administer deep sedation. Therefore it is CMS that does not permit the nurses to administer propofol. Furthermore, the FDA has recently re-confirmed that propofol may only be administered by individuals ‘trained in the administration of general anesthesia and not involved in the conduct of the surgical/diagnostic procedure;’ this also restricts who administers it.
