Sound Patterns 英语音系 Chinese English Howlong, a well-to-do Chinese from Bensonville, a suburb of Chicago, is naturally fond of Chinese food. His favorite dish is fried rice. Unfortunately, there isn’t any Chinese restaurant in his neighborhood. But there is a Greek restaurant nearby, and it so happens one of the feature courses there is fried rice. Mr Howlong used to patronize the place regularly. Although he is a knowledgeable Chinese gentleman, his English pronunciation leaves something to be desired: he calls fried rice “flied lice”. Sam Agnew, the proprietor of the restaurant , got mad one day and told Howlong off, “Your English pronunciation is atrocious. MY customers become nauseous and stay away from my place. Go out and learn how to pronounce ‘fried rice’ correctly, or don’t come back. Mr. Howlong became furious too, and for three months he did not come anywhere near the Greek restaurant. Finally, he couldn’t fold out any longer, as the urge for Chinese food got the best of him. He learned from his neighbor, Jim Flagherty, to pronounce fried rice perfectly. t Then he walked straight to the Greek restaurant and said to Sam Agnew: “Give me some fried rice, you ‘clazy Gleek’!” English Syllable Structure and phonological Inventory English: consonant clusters in onset and coda fried flied crazy clazy Greek, gleek Green 格林,Clinton, Frick 弗里克 pl, bl, cl, gl, fl, pr, br, cr, gr, fr, sm, sn, sp, sk, st, sl, sq, sc, scr, str, spr, scl, *stl, spl Coda position mp, nt, lt; mps, nts, lts, texts = teksts, sixths = siksθs, One syllable, two syllables and three syllables Syllable Structure Syllable Onset rime nucleus coda Consonant(s) vowel consonant(s) Sonority Hierarchy a. *bnick b. *kibn c. lab network [[lab]pwd[network]pwd]pwd] d. drabness (drab+ness) e. ab.ne.gate, ab.nor.mal Sonority is defined loosely as the degree of constriction in the mouth during the production of a particular sound.
