Powdery Mildew Fungi of Thailand: Integrated Analyses of Morphological and Molecular Characteristics Chaiwat To-anun1 and Susumu Takamatsu2 1. Department of Plant Pathology, Faculty of Agriculture, Chiang Mai University, Thailand; E-mail: agppi006@chiangmai.ac.th 2. Laboratory of Plant Pathology, Faculty of Bioresources, Mie University, Japan; E-mail: takamatu@bio.mie-u.ac.jp Abstract: Powdery mildews are one of the most widespread and easily recognized plant diseases. Their common symptom is a grayish-white, powdery mat visible on the surface of leaves, stems and flower petals. They affect virtually a wide range of angiosperms such as cereals and grasses, vegetables, ornamentals, weeds, shrubs, fruit trees, and broad-leaved shade and forest trees. In Thailand, powdery mildews are common on roses, grape, vegetables (such as cucurbits and peas), tamarind, rambutan, durian, mango, papaya, strawberry, etc. For many years, the identification and classification of the powdery mildew fungi are based largely on the morphology of the teleomorph. Because of absence of the sexual stage for the vast majority of Thais powdery mildew fungi, many specimens have been kept as unidentified status. The main objectives of this study are to describe and identify the powdery mildews fungi of Thailand. Since 1999, a total of 227 specimens from 115 host plant species covering 61 families have been collected. The powdery mildews found in this study include anamorphic state genera Oidium, Oidiopsis and Ovulariopsis, and teleomorphic state genera Erysiphe (including section Uncinula), Phyllactinia and Brasiliomyces. The genus Oidium was divided into subgenus Pseudoidium on 40 host plant species, subgenus Fibroidium on 60 host plant species and Reticuloidium on 6 host plant species. Oidium subgenus Microidium is proposed as a new subgenus of Oidium on the basis morphological and molecular characteristics on three species of Phyllanthus spp. The genera Oidiopsis and Ovulariopsis were describe
