I I Abstract The material the author translated is from the book Bess W Truman, a biography which is recommended by my friend and published by Macmillan Publishing House. The author is in charge of the translation of Chapter One and a part of Chapter Two. The author of the book is Margaret Truman, a detective novelist biographer, who is known as American Agatha Christie. She has affectionately etched a finely detailed and intimate portrait of her mother as well as the enduring love between their parents from a perspective of their daughter. In the meanwhile this book depicts the political environment of that times. This thesis can be divided into four parts: The first part describes the task and introduces the author and her works; The second part gives the processes of writing this thesis. In the third part, the author puts the Tylers translation theory into the practice. The last part is translation summary. The third is the main part of this thesis, in which the Tylers translation theory exhibits its important function on these problems during the translation process: the accuracy of the language; the conversion of style; the coherence of language. Translation is a synthetic subject,which involves such fields such as society, politics, economics, culture, technology, religion as well. Translation is also an art in which the translator should have creativity and learn how to change from these two roles--a painter and a sculptor. After intimating and repairing, the work of art can express the essence of the original work. Therefore translation is more than a simple conversion from one word or a sentence to another. It requires some qualifications to be a good translator: a good command of English and Chinese; a great deal of cultural knowledge and theories; sufficient conscience as a professional translator.
