Abstract This thesis focuses on the analysis of Nathaniel Hawthorne‘s masterpiece The Scarlet Letter from the perspective of foregrounding theory in stylistics. According to the survey, there are various preceding studies on The Scarlet Letter from different perspective. Some are about the theme; some are comparison study between The Scarlet Letter and many novels both from home and abroad; others aim at studying about the translation edition of The Scarlet Letter. Only a few are about the writing style restricted to the study of one item of literary stylistic layer, e.g. image description, or to the study of the plot and biblical archetype. This thesis tries to present and interpret the foregrounding linguistic features in The Scarlet Letter through using the foregrounding theory in stylistics.
