Theoretical and Empirical Research of the Dimensions of E-business Capability
ABSTRACT
Although the rapid development of E-business which characterized by network-based electronic exchange in the 1990s, researchers and practitioners are struggling to determine whether and how these sizeable investments in E-business improve the business performance. The insights provided by the rich body of literature on the business value of IT investment in the context of the traditional business environment have been invaluable, but they fall far short of furnishing an adequate answer to the question of whether an IT inveatment generates business value in the new net-enabled business environment. Focusing on the connectivity, interactivity and openness of the unique internet, the theory of E-business capability can explain this issue much better. So revealing the meaning and the dimensions of E-business capablility is not only a theoretical significance, but also the problems to be solved in E-business practice.
Drawing on competence-based theory, reference to the more mature theory of information technology as well as the existing literature, this study explore the meaning and the dimensions of E-business capability. Then we make empirical research to validate reliability and validity of theoretical model using data collected through survey method. The research is divided into two steps:
First of all, based on the the literature review, we conduct content analysis with 32 interviews to top managers of firms which applied e-business through different ways from popular websites and carry out the coding procedure with 216 effective items which are finalized through careful examining and revising. Then the coding results are collated and summarized with the aid of qualitative analysis software MAXQDA2007.
