Why are Australians called the descendents of convicts? Britain in the late 18th century: was a period of immense social and political change. In Britain the industrial revolution had driven thousands of poverty-stricken country folk to the cities. As a new underclass dependent on crime emerged, the prisons were overflowing. A new solution to the problem of the burgeoning prison population was urgently needed. The botanist ( expert on plants) from Captain Cooks discovery expedition 18 years earlier eventually hit upon the idea of Botany Bay, Australia a place in SE of Australia, where criminals from the UK could be sent to live and work as punishment. Therefore between 1788 and 1868 165,000 British and Irish convicts made the arduous journey to an unknown land we now call Australia. The majority of the 165,000 convicts transported to Australia were poor and illiterate, most for larceny (theft) of some description. While the vast majority of the convicts to Australia were English and Welsh (70%), Irish (24%) or Scottish (5%), the convict population had a multicultural flavor. Some convicts had been sent from various British outposts such as India and Canada. There were also Maoris from New Zealand, Chinese from Hong Kong and slaves from the Caribbean. The average age of the transportee was 26, and their number included children who were either convicted of crimes or were making the journey with their mothers. Just one in six transportees was a woman. There were political prisoners
