A comparison is made between the love suicide in You san-jie in Hong Lou Meng (Dream of the Red Chamber) and that of Mei-jin, the leopard and the sheep (The White Kid), in Shen Cong-wen novel. The purpose of the comparison is to analyse “the prototype” of love suicide stories and their narrative sequence in the subject of love in the Pre-modern and modern novels. The analysis reveals Shen Congwen’s writings style through the recreated stories. Shen continued the traditional way of lyrical narrative and put his aesthetic intention into practice in a rhetorical way by using metaphors and metonyms in stories. His style has created a new kind of allegory in his era.
