First and foremost, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to my supervisor Prof. Qian Zhengfu for his patient guidance, warm encouragement and strict instruction in my postgraduate study in Soochow University. Prof. Qian has offered me much valuable advice and inspiration throughout the process of the composition of the thesis, ranging from the formation of the ideas to the framework of the thesis and the revision of the drafts. Abstract
Tang Xianzu (1550-1616), with a high esteem in the literature world, was a renowned playwright in the late Ming Dynasty. His artistic achievements are mainly embodied in his plays, especially The Peony Pavilion, his masterpiece which consists of 55 scenes. The play depicts the extraordinary love between Du Liniang and Liu Mengmei and attacks the suffocating atmosphere in the late Ming Dynasty that restricts the full development of humanity and advocates the freedom of man.
