Abstract The design of the engine cooling system and its parts’ structural strength have a direct impact on the engine’s dynamic performance, economic performance and reliability, so it is an important field of engine study. The cylinder head is one part which suffers the high temperature and thermal stress in engine, so it is one of the most important ground-works to study heat transfer and thermal status of the cylinder head for its thermal fatigue and thermal equilibrium investigation. Now , finite volume method makes it realizable to simulate the coupled heat transfer between liquid and solid. This paper reviewed the heat transfer and flow of the engine cooling system firstly, then talked about the study about the heat stress, heat fatigue and cooling of the cylinder head at home and abroad, focus on the important role which the solid-fluid interaction plays in the analysis of the heat transfer on the cylinder head; describe the basic principles of the solid-fluid interaction and the basic steps of how to achieve the solid-fluid interaction. Created the water jacket-cylinder head system, and calculated the temperature field of the system with the method of fluid-solid interaction. Through much of experimental research on the cooling system and temperature filed of the cylinder head , we proved that the improved program of the two-valve diesel engine was more reasonable than the original one. And on this basis, proposed four-valve cylinder head of the diesel engine program. Using computational fluid dynamic(CFD), the velocity filed and heat transfer was calculated. Then an engine cycle simulation is analyzed firstly and the heat transfer coefficient of the intake-port, export and fire deck is confirmed accordingly, based on which the temperature field is obtained. In order to discover the effect of the material on the temperature field of cylinder head, the thermal boundary conditions of the cylinder head were confirmed by engine cycle simulation.
