A POSTERIORI ERROR ESTIMATES OF THE TIME-DEPENDENT EQUATION ABSTRACT The problems of time-dependent convection-dominated diffusion have the hy- perbolic nature,so its solution functions have large gradient changes in the bound- ary layer and buffer layer.Therefore,in the numerical calculation, the standard fi- nite element method often gives rise to severe shock value, while the classical method of artificial viscosity Galerkin only has the first-order accuracy. After the 1970s, a number of non-standard finite element methods have been successively proposed one after another. The streamline diffusion method ( S D method) im- proves the stability of the finite element method, but increases the complexity of the actual calculation. The finite-different streamline diffusion method( FD ? S D method) has decreased the quantity of calculation. However,the quantity of cal- culation is still relatively large. The economical FD ? S D method ( EFD ? S D ) not only maintains the basic characteristics of the S D method , but also reduces the computational complexity significantly. In the numerical solution of partial differential equations, a posteriori error esti- mation has important significance. Now a posteriori error estimation has achieved many results based on S D method and FD ? S D method, but the study of a posteriori error estimation which based on the economical FD ? S D method ( EFD ? S D ) has not been seen yet. This thesis discusses a posteriori error estimation of the development equation with time variable t . With two-dimensional convection-dominated diffusion equa- tion as an example, the economical FD ? S D format and its stability analysis of the time-dependent convection-dominated diffusion equations have been given, and by means of the dual problem,a posteriori error estimation of the economical FD ?
