On Translation of Nicknames in Chinese Classic Novel Shui Hu Zhuan from the Sociosemiotic Perspective Abstract The thesis attempts to deal with translation of nicknames in Chinese classic novel Shui Hu Zhuan (i.e Outlaws of the Marsh) under the guidance of a sociosemiotic approach to translation. Nicknames are additional names which are given according to one’s features or surroundings. Nicknames, especially those in literary works, play an important role in portraying characters. So how to correctly understand and translate nicknames is vital to the reproduction of characters in target language. However, translating is no easy job. For one thing, nicknames are an artistic form of language and product of human’s wisdom; for another, nicknames are a highly condensed social and cultural phenomenon, and they reflect specific cultural features, including way of life, moral conceptions, aesthetic standards, values as well as modes of thinking. Sociosemiotics is a discipline which deals with all the systems of signs and codes used by human societies, and especially with language as the most comprehensive and complex of all the systems of signs which humans employ. Sociosemiotics insists that any sign has meaning and interpretation of signs cannot be isolated from the social context. It goes out of the range of pure linguistic level, and its focus is on other factors such as culture, context and register that also convey meaning. A sociosemiotic approach to translation seems more comprehensive, systematic and advantageous. According to principles of a sociosemiotic approach to translation, translation is translating meaning, including designative meaning, linguistic meaning and pragmatic meaning; besides meaning transference, translation should also reflect linguistic function of the original; context and culture are two important and influencing factors in the process of translating and should be taken into consideration.
