effects of human activities, based on the water function zoning of North Canal, the North Canal was divided into six reaches: Shahe reservoir~ Shahe gate, Shahe gate ~Beiguan gate, Beiguan gate~Yangwa gate, Yangwa gate ~Tumenlou gate, Tumenlou gate ~Kuangergang gate, Kuangergang gate ~Qujiadian gate. ③Divided stages: because the severe damage of the ecosystem, the structure and function of North Canal could not be restored to the formerly status in short time .The restoration of river health should be carried out step by step. The first stage: restoring the basic environment function of river, ensuring the lower flow for maintaining the biological habitat. The second stage: restoring the partial structure and function of river, maintaining the level of ecological environment suitable for biological existence. The third stage: restoring the structure and the function of the river ecosystem, providing the favorable living environment for aquatic organisms, realizing the diversity of organisms. (3) Analyzed systematically the variation characteristics of water resources in North Canal Basin, combined with the result of dispatch of gate dam whose purpose is to meet the ecological water requirement, based on the guarantee situation of the ecological water requirement for river in different protection target situation, the guarantee project was proposed with the recycled water as the main source of water: the ecological water requirement in situation 1 ( the lower ecological water requirement) should get satisfied by dispatch of gate bam; the extra supply of the ecological water requirement is 25 million m3 in situation 2 (the moderate ecological water requirement); the extra supply of the ecological water requirement is 129 million m3 in situation 3 (the best ecological water requirement), and it can be used as a long-term goal. Finally, the conclusions are made in this paper, and the problems for further study in ecological water requirement of river are reviewed. KEY
