Abstract Language transfer has been studied for many years, which has made significant progress in domestic and abroad linguistic field. In addition, the influence that native language exerts on second language teaching and learning is a permanently controversial issue. However, most of the previous studies on language transfer have been conducted from various linguistic aspects, such as syntax, phonology, semantics, interlanguage pragmatics, and so on. Few researches have explained the phenomenon of language transfer from the point of contextual factors, especially in the EFL learning environment. According to the Compensation Hypothesis, this paper intends to explore the language transfer in SLA from the contextual perspective. In 2003, Professor Wang chuming put forward the Compensation Hypothesis, which insists that the deficiency of corresponding L2 contextual knowledge is likely to result in a mismatch of L1 contextual knowledge with the L2 linguistic forms, then bringing about the language transfer. This conceptualization of language transfer concentrates on contextual factors, rather than L2 linguistic forms. That is to say, language transfer may be an outcome of an improper combination of linguistic form and contextual knowledge. When learners use foreign language in high gear, they tend to make up for the target contextual knowledge with the already existing first language contextual knowledge, activating the related L1 linguistic forms, rather than replacing defective foreign language expressions by first language structure. The use of a language is context-dependent, and no words are meaningful without a certain context. Only the appropriate and correct combination between linguistic forms and the matched contextual knowledge can produce the fluent and accurate language.
