ABSTRACT Canal is a symbol for a city in terms of civilization and prosperity. It represents a once glorious city, along with the shipping canal function disappears, the canal gradually abandoned, and north of the canal has basically been drying up. While urban development also affect the fate of the canal, the canal water quality deterioration,environmental degradation and river blockage caused by urbanization.The canal for cultural heritage declaring proposed governance canal on the agenda, so digging the potential value of the canal, the canal development combined with urban development has become an important research topic. Based on the research, combination of landscape design, landscape planning, landscape psychology, landscape ecology theory of urban canal landscape planning and design, Aims to research the canal landscape design theory which can compliance with urban development,reflect the canal culture and meet the needs of life.Hope that the research results can provide a theoretical basis for urban canal landscape design, add luster to the urban landscape. This article was divided into three parts: the first part describes the background, purpose and significance of urban canal landscape; expresses the concepts of the landscape,three theories of Landscape planning : a unified theory, environmental psychology and landscape ecology; analysis of the constituent elements of the canal landscape: natural elements, shoreline, bridge boat docks, cultural factors and human factors. The second part reviews the history and culture of the canal, from a historical perspective on the analysis of the changes in the function of the canal; through the history and landscape of the investigation into the canal of LiaoCheng, analysis of the development direction of the canal. The third part presents the principles and objectives of the canal landscape planning; based on emerging issues, put forward the corresponding countermeasures; according to the present situation and
