The clinical analyses of 162 cases with childhood acute myeloid leukemia Abstract Objective:To analyse the clinical data from childhood acute myeloid leukemia(AML) patients and the reasons of giving up the treatment. Methods:The patients clinical data of 162 AML patients from January 2006 to November 2011 in Suzhou Childrens hospital were reviewed retrospectively. Results:Childhood AML showed more proportion of M2 and M3 subtypes, six-year-old children were more common without any difference between males and females.The number of patients receiving chemotherapy accounted for 72.2% of the total patients (117/162); After the first induction chemotherapy, the complete remission rates (CR rates) were 88.9% and 64.2% for M3 and non-M3 subtype, respectively; Patients with non-M3 receiving DAE as first induction therapy got CR at 67.3% which was,slightly higher than other induction regimens, but there was no statistically significant(P0.05); Total patients giving up chemotherapy at the beginning of chemotherapy or during consolidation treatment was 66 cases, the top reason is poor economic support; 76 cases lost to follow-up. Conclusion: The CR rates of M3 and non-M3 subtype after the first induction chemotherapy are lower as a whole and need further cooperation with large scale of groups in childhood AML clinical trials. The main reason for giving-up is due to economic status. High proportion of lost to follow-up is mainly due to Chinese culture in which parents don’t like their leukemic kid well known to others. The hospital should establish more effective system to give them long-life support to strengthen following-up.
