Abstract Since pragmatics began to be studied as an independent discipline in the 1980s, it has exerted great influence on translation studies. Adaptation Theory, as one of the most important pragmatic approach, made its debut in Working Document 1 of the International Pragmatics Association in 1987. Its inventor, Jef Verschueren defines pragmatics as a general functional perspective on (any aspect of) language, i.e. as an approach to language which takes into account the full complexity of its cognitive, social and cultural functioning. The key content of Adaptation Theory is that the process of language use is actually a process of making dynamic language choices with different salience so as to adapt to language users’ communicative needs. There are four angles of investigation which should be seen as focal points in a coherent pragmatic approach to language use: contextual correlates of adaptability, structural objects of adaptability, dynamics of adaptability and salience of adaptation. Gaining inspirations from Adaptation Theory, many researchers have conducted some beneficial and productive surveys on the applications of Adaptation Theory to translation studies. However, there are some limitations on the previous researches on the application of Adaptation Theory to translation studies. Firstly, most of researches are conducted from the perspective of the contextual adaptations, such as linguistic context and communicative context, but adaptations to style of literary works have been scarcely studied. Secondly, its four aspects of adaptability, have never been applied systematically to any comparative studies on translated texts. The Catcher in the Rye written by J. D.
