This translation report takes English disclaimer as the original text and does not just focus on conveying the stylish features of legal text. Importantly, it passes on the exact content to Chinese readers with different background of language, legal knowledge and culture. In the process of translation, the translator attaches more importance to how to use language to avoid misunderstanding. In the book Understanding Pragmatics, Verschueren proposes language use is a process of constantly making language choices to cater for the communicative needs. Translation, as a special form of language use, also is a process of making language choices by translators serving for the purposes of translation. Based on the adaptation theory, this thesis illustrates the four aspects of the meaningful functioning of language and their relationship. Through typical examples, the thesis explores methods to achieve context adaptation and linguistic adaptation in the process of making linguistic choices. To make the translation of disclaimer more acceptable for Chinese readers, the thesis takes into consideration the differences on language and culture and manages to make contextual adaptation including communicative context and linguistic context adaptation.
