He is already the longest-serving Head of State in Latin America and the third longest-serving political leader in the world, after Kim II Sung of North Korea and Todor Zhivkov of Bulgaria. He is also the longest-serving president in the history of Paraguay, exceeding by far the twenty-six year reign of Dr Francia, the architect of Paraguayan independence, who ruled the country from 1814 until 1840.
