A parabola is proposed to describe volume strain curve in Nan-Shu imodel, but the stress-dilatancy is a constant during failure, wh ich has remarkable inaccuracy compared w ith observed response. N an-Shu imodel can describe stress-axial strain-volum e strain relationsh ips only before failure ormaxmi um dilatancy, but then Duncan model can describe the range of strain that ismuch smaller. So its necessary to establish a constitutivemodel to de- scribe suitably the stress-axial strain-volume strain relationsh ips in a large range of strain for the progressive failure analysis in geotechn ical engineering. In this paper, a constitutivemodel based on the d isturbed state concept is pro- posed to characterize the behavior of rockfillmaterials. The d isturbed state concept ( DSC) is based on the idea that a deform ing material elem ent can be treated as a m ix of two constituent parts in the relative intact ( RI) and fully adjusted ( FA ) state, referred as reference states.
