The The Effects of Teacher,S Oral C orrective Feedback on the Development of Chinese Middle School StudentsImplicit English Grammatical Knowledge AThesis Submitted to Foreign Studies College Of Hunan Normal University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of Master of Arts in the Subject of English Teaching Methodology By Duan Yiqun Under the Supervision of Associate Professor Zhu Mitai Changsha,Hunan May,201 1 AbstractCorrective Abstract Corrective feedback is a topic that has sparked a great deal of interest in the field of SLA abroad.Even SO,empirical investigations into the relationship between corrective feedba.ck and the development of implicit knowledge are fewer.And again,studies in this area conducted by Chinese researchers are scarce.Taking the Interaction Hypothesis,the Output Hypothesis and the Noticing Hypothesis as its theoretical foundations,and based on Ellis and Loewen’S research into implicit knowledge,the current study investigates empirically the effects of teacher,s oral corrective feedback on the development of Chinese middle sch001咖dents,implicit English grammatical knowledge.Specifically,it examines whether teacher’S oral corrective feedback in the form of recasts in or prompts leads to an improvement in the accuracy and automaticity terms of grammatical use,and at the same time it explores whether recasts and prompts have differential effects on the development of implicit knowledge of two different grammatical structures.Additionally, this study investigates the relationship between students’attitudes towaIIds en.or correction and the effects of teacher’S oral corrective feedback.
