Guidelines for the addition of in-circuit programmability toAT51 applications are presented along with an application example andthe modifications to it required to support in?circuit prog ramming. Amethod isthen shown by whichthe AT51microcontroller in the applies tion can be reprogrammed remotely, overa commercialtelephone line. The circuitry described in thisapplication note supports five volt programming only, requiring the use of an AT51-XX-5.The standard AT51 requires 12volts forprogramming. The sof tware forthis application maybe obtained by downloading from Atmels. General Considerations EA/VPPmust be held high during programming. Inapplications whichdo not uti lize external program memory,this pin may be permanently strapped toVCC. Appli cations utilizing external program memory requirethat thispin be held low during normaloperation. RST mustbe held active during programming. A means must beprovidedfor overriding the applicationreset circuit, which typically assertsRST only briefly after power is applied? PSEN mustbe held low duri ng programming, but must not be drive n duri ng normal operation. ALE/PROG ispulsed low duri ng programming, but must not be driven duri ng normal operation. 89CDuring programming, AT51 I/O ports are used for theapplication of mode select, addresses and data, possibly requiring that the controller beisolatedfrom the applicati on circuitry. How thisis done is applicati on depe ndent and will be addressed here only in gen eral terms. Port Used for Input During programming, the controller must be isolated from signals sourced by th e application circuitry. A buffer with three stateoutputs might be inserted between the applicationcircuitryand the controller,with thebuffer outputs three-stated when programming is enabled.
