新编英语语法教程教案 篇一:新编英语语法教程第二讲教案 Teaching Notes Chapter Two The Subject-verb Concord Ⅰ Teaching Aims: This chapter aims to: 1. help students to know the principles of concord:① the grammatical principle ② the notional principle ③ the principle of proximity. 2. get students to learn knowledge of the subject-verb concord in details. Ⅱ Teaching Procedures 1. The Principles of Concord Concord, also termed “agreement”, can be defined as the relation between tow grammatical units. Such a relationship could be formed on the basis of several grammatical features such as person and number. But the most important type of concord, which we are mainly concerned with in this chapter, is the number concord between subject and verb. The subject-verb concord is governed by three complementary principles: the grammatical principle, the notional principle and principle of proximity. 1) The Grammatical Principle The grammatical principle stipulates that the verb matches its subject both in person and in number. Many people want to go. he three kinds above. 2) Plural a) things composing two parts: scissors, pincers, shorts, trousers etc. His trousers are quite new. b) nouns ending with –ings: earnings, belongings, clippings, diggings, surroundings, sweepings, lodgings etc. Our total earnings were about sixty dollars. c) nouns ending with –s: archives, arms, clothes, contents, stairs, wages, fireworks, eaves, thanks etc. High wages often result in high prices. 3) Either Singular or Plural: barracks, headquarters, means, series, species,works etc. A headquarters was set up to direct the operation. Their headquarters are Paris From the examples, we can find the rule. If we use the noun as singular, the verb after it will be in singular.
