Ice Cream Filling: Paraphrase, Summary, QuotationAfter introducing the concept you will be discussing, bring in a specific idea or example from the author in the form of a paraphrase, summary, or direct quote from the reading. There are three ways to weave a quote into your analysis correctly:Use a tag line.Weave the quotation into a sentence of your own.Set up the quote with an analytical sentence of your own and use a colon before you list the quote to illustrate your point. Use a Tag LineExample:Kim Smith claims, “The infiltration of pop culture is inevitable” (22). Weave a quotation into a sentence of your ownExample:We find that the “infiltration of pop culture” (Smith 22) is destined to happen. Set up the quote with an analytical sentence of your ownExample:The process is inevitable in American pop culture: “Teens will always be influenced by the media machine” (Smith 23). Bottom Cookie: AnalysisAnalytically interpret what the paraphrased, summarized or quoted passage from the author is saying, making sure to break down each part of a complex quote and defining terms when needed. Then, give an analytical response to the idea the quote is making: Agree with, disagree, elaborate, or critique the ideas or logic of the arguments. Example: Smith is saying that it is natural and predictable that ideas of popular culture will seep into the tastes and values of teenagers.
