Compare the two images locating on each the calcarine sulcus, lingual gyrus and cuneus. The primary visual cortex is located on the banks of the calcarine sulcus and represents the contralateral visual hemifield. Contralateral (here left) upper visual field is represented on the lower (ventral) bank and contralateral lower visual field is represented on the upper (dorsal) bank. The fovea is represented posteriorly and the peripheral visual field anteriorly. * Horizontal Slab. This image is of a horizontal slab from an unstained fixed brain, viewed from below. The occipital lobe is to the right. The visual (optic) radiation is beautifully displayed in this section; it projects from the lateral geniculate nucleus (not shown) of the thalamus, lateral to the inferior (temporal) and posterior (occipital) horns of the lateral ventricle, to the primary visual cortex (striate cortex, Area 17) in the occipital lobe in the banks of the calcarine sulcus. * Horizontal Dissection. This dorsal view of the dissected brain is in the same orientation as the slab in the previous frame; the occipital lobe is at the right of the image. Here, the corpus callosum is revealed in the midline and some of its interhemispheric fibers followed out, particularly through the genu and splenium. The splenium of the corpus callosum interconnects (double-headed arrow) the visual association cortex of each hemisphere. Note however, that the primary visual cortex of one hemisphere (except for a narrow strip of the cortex representing the vertical meridian) is NOT connected to primary visual cortex of the other hemisphere. The floor of the calcarine sulcus (portion of the lingual gyrus) is seen because the cuneus (dorsal to the fissure) has been removed.
