Introduction
This paper aims to investigate the rolling effect on wave added resistance, which significantly impacts
fuel consumption.
The following factors demonstrate the importance to study the rolling effect on the waves:
1、The roll motion is always thought to contribute little to the wave added resistance compared to the
heave and pitch motions. However, these motions are hard to control and the roll motion is to some
extent convenient to reduce.
2 、The main purpose of anti-rolling devices is to improve the ambience for the crew. However, more
and more autonomous ships (like YARA) will be built over the next few years. This raises the question
on the necessity to install anti-rolling devices for autonomous ships in future.
