Michael Porter in his influential book, Competition in Global Industries, observed that: Competing internationally is a necessity rather than a matter of discretion for many firms. More recently, Hax and Ohmae proposed that success or failure of businesses in the twenty-first century will depend on effectively competing in world markets. Accordingly, globalization is increasingly being adopted as a business mandate. The modern meaning of globalization implies a global perspective of the particular area of study, a perspective that arises from the increased interdependence of national institutions and national economies. Bradley et al describe globalization as a business concept in this way:
For transnational corporations, the use of expatriate employees is seen to have strategic value ,as:
.expatriates are more likely than local employees to have knowledge of global operations and identify with corporate objectives;
.expatriates are a means of exerting strategic control; and
.expatriate assignments provide international expertise to employeesIn this paper we focus on the issue of expatriate compensation. This area is particularly worthy of attention in light of Bonache and Fernadez's observation that:
The aspect of expatriate management that has received the least amount of attention is compensation.
With regard to terminology, expatriates are defined as citizens of the corporation's headquarter country, but who are working in a foreign countryhost country.Third country nationalsTCNsare citizens of a country other than the headquarters or host country ,and local nationals are citizens of the host country.
