The resource and environmental performance model was established by selecting the regional GDP, total energy consumption, total water consumption, urban develop- ment land area, investment in fixed assets, SO2 emissions, COD emissions and industrial solid waste emissions for the purpose of the resource and environment performance evaluation of 15 prefecture-level national sustainable communities in 2012. The results showed that: (1) Each na- tional sustainable community has made the favorable progress in exploring a sustainable devel- opment pattern which can better balance between regional resource, environment and economy, and as a whole, the resource and environment performance of national sustainable communities is higher than that of the national average apparently. (2) There is an obvious spatial difference between the 15 prefecture-level national sustainable communities. The highest and the lowest REPI are distributed in the eastern and western ar
