Stanza Three The voyage is finally over and the victory is won, but the captain is dead. What a contrast between the celebration of victory and the dead captain lying on the deck. Further explanation: 1) By using the third person the poet expresses that he can accept the cruel reality of Lincoln’s death. 2) “still” and “will” sound like “trill” of bugle, creating a mournful atmosphere. 3) The poet presents a striking contrast between “the bleeding drops of red” and “his lips are pale and still”, enriching the readers’ vision and imagination. 3) The lines “I with mournful tread, / Walk the deck my Captain lies.” show the poet’s hopes and illusions were shattered when facing “Fallen cold and dead.” 4) The repetitious use of “cold and dead” in the poem enforces a sorrowful effect of art. Major Themes This poem eulogizes Lincoln’s monumental contributions and expresses the poet’s mourning for Lincoln’s death with the background of the victory of the Civil War. Poetic Features Walt Whitman was one of the most important American poets in the nineteenth century and one of the great innovators in American literature. In the preface to his Leaves of Grass, he says that one of his focuses is on the sort of poet America required and the sort of poetry America needed. The poem is an elegy on the death of President Abraham Lincoln and it is noted for its regular form, meter, and rhyme, though it is also known for its sentimentality verging on the maudlin. The poem is highly popular among American people. It portrays Lincoln as the captain of a sea-worn ship which represents or symbolizes the Union that had experienced the American Civil War and triumphant at last.
