Ab stract: The temperature obtained from a rad iation thermometer needs to be corrected according
to the em issivity of the measured objec.t How ever, the em issivity is affected by many factors, such
as roughness. Smi ulation results for surfaces w ith different roughnesses are compared. It is found
that the effects of roughness on the bidirectional reflectance distribution function and norm al
em issivity are significan.t A ttention must be paid to themeasurement error caused by the uncertainty
in the normal em issivity if an accurate measurement of temperatu re is to be obtained.
